GOING GREEN

Protecting the Environment

Coconut Court Beach Hotel was awarded a GOLD award from the Travelife Foundation for Sustainable Tourism in 2011. Prior to this distinction Coconut Court had been one of the first hotels on the island to meet the criteria for becoming a certified Green Globe Hotel. Coconut Court is committed to minimizing the impact of our business on the environment that we inhabit. We continue to pursue initiatives and processes that protect and preserve the environment and we ask our guests to join in our efforts to help protect and improve the fragile eco-systems upon which we are so dependent.

Energy Management

•   Hot water is provided by solar panels located on the rooftops of the hotel. In addition to this natural heating provided by the Caribbean sunshine we have installed natural gas heaters.

•   All guest rooms are equipped with air conditioning units but we ask our guests to keep all windows and doors closed when the unit is in operation and to turn off the unit when leaving their guest room. The remote control is programmed to an optimal setting only.  Each guest room is equipped with a ceiling fan.

•   A notice in the room encourages our guests to turn off lights, etc when they are not in their room.

•   Energy saving light bulbs are installed throughout the hotel property.

•   Low wattage lighting is used on guest room balconies and on the beachfront to limit disorientation of Hawksbill sea turtles that nest on the hotel beach from July through November.

•   Guests are encouraged to limit their impact on the hotel laundry to allow us to conserve water and electricity. This is done by changing bath towels only when requested and bed sheets every three days.

Chemical Husbandry

•   Minimal usage of laundry and cleaning supplies that contain harmful phosphates and chlorine.

•   Detergents used in the laundry, kitchens and housekeeping departments are environmentally friendly.

•   We have intentionally removed white linen table cloths and napkins at breakfast and lunch to reduce laundry usage.

•   Daily monitoring of pool chorine content and Ph according to HCCP regulations, allows as little chlorine to be used as possible.

The Beach & The Sea

•   In 1991 a breakwater was built in the sea directly in front of the hotel to minimize erosion to the beach.

•   Eighteen patented ‘reef balls’ were constructed and sunk in the swimming lagoon to encourage tropical reef fish. These reef balls have created an artificial man-made reef.

•   Organic fish food is available at the beach bar for snorkeling enthusiasts.

•   The beach is raked by hand daily. No automated tractors are used to destroy/disturb the beach environment.

•   Coconut trees (30 foot root system) have been planted on the beach to reduce beach erosion.

•   Beach Almond trees were planted on the beach to offer natural shade for guests.

Facilities

•   50,000 gallons of water is stored in an underground reservoir and is used to flush toilets and irrigate the hotel gardens.

•   Plastic and glass bottles are recycled locally. All other garbage is collected by a registered Governmental firm to ensure correct disposal.

•   Plastic straws are served with drinks and cocktails on request only.
